University of Hertfordshire's Crush Radio was the first student radio station in the UK and was founded in 1960 followed by University Radio York, founded in 1967, and Swansea University's station Action Radio (today called Xtreme Radio) in 1968.

The first university radio station to broadcast was University Radio York, which broadcast for the first time that year as Radio York under a test licence, and was the first station independent of the BBC to broadcast legally in the UK. It was the first station independent of the BBC to broadcast legally in the UK. The station was relaunched as University Radio York in 1969, featuring a guest broadcast by DJ John Peel.

York University radio station was then followed by other university radio such as University Radio Essex (URE) now called RED, which is based at the Colchester campus of the University of Essex, who started broadcasting shortly after.
