BBC Radio 1 Deputy Controller: “Student Radio is key to Radio 1’s success”

Ben Cooper, Deputy Controller, BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra  today credited part of the continued success of Radio 1 to the wealth of emerging talent from student radio. Speaking at the National Student Radio Conference in Leeds, his first engagement since taking on the role of Deputy Controller, Cooper advised students on getting into the modern day industry – and most importantly why student radio can be key to the success of a young broadcaster.

During the speech, Cooper offered exclusive tours of the Radio 1 studios to two lucky students – who completed two inpromptu tasks. Both students, Matt from Smoke Radio in London and Chris from Crush Radio in Hertfordshire were both really excited at the opportunity provided by the BBC.

One of the key points of Cooper’s speech was how important student radio can be in enhancing potential career prospects for young broadcasters.

Mark Farrington, Student Radio Chairman added to Ben Cooper’s comments saying:  “Student Radio provides a unique test bed for people wanting to get into all areas of broadcasting – giving them a real chance to develop their talents, from Presenting, Marketing and Production – right through to the technical side of broadcasting”.

Ben Cooper joined a varied line up of Radio Talent from both Commercial Radio and the BBC for the first day of the National Student Radio Conference. Speakers included James Cridland from BBC Audio and Music Future Media and Technology and Steve Lamacq from BBC 6Music. Another highlight of the conference is expected tomorrow as Ashley Tabor, CEO of global radio provides an exclusive speech to students. The conference this year takes place within Leeds University Students’ Union – home of this year’s host station, LSRfm.com.
