Student radio stations in the UK are represented by the Student Radio Association (SRA). This organisation represents the collective of stations at a national level, as well as providing advice and help to all affiliated stations through their events and activities.
The SRA’s flagship event of the year is the Student Radio Awards, with support from BBC Radio 1 to recognise the best talent and programming in student radio stations from across the UK. The awards began in 1995 and since then many winners of the Student Radio Awards have gone on to become big names within the UK radio industry, most notably of late is Greg James, (Winner Best Male 2005), who now works at Radio 1, and Mark Crossley,(Winner Best Male 2008) who works on Absolute radio weeknights from 12.
The SRA also organises the Student Radio Chart Show where Student radio stations across the UK broadcast a syndicated Chart Show. The show currently broadcasts on Sundays from 3-5pm during term-time and is compiled from the top-ranking tracks played on student radio stations across the UK.
As well as the SRA, the Association of Student Radio Alumni (ASRA) was set up as an organisation to provide a way for alumni of student stations to keep in touch with each other and the stations that they were from.
As well as organising regular events, ASRA provides tools on its website (blogs, forums and mailing lists) so local alumni stations can be easily set up free of charge.
