About 1350AM GU2 Radio
1350AM GU2 Radio Studio

Looking for fame, fortune and a snug spot next to the great and the good of the world? Marry a footballer.

Thinking about doing something fun in your spare time which may lead you to the odd minor perk for playing music and doing the odd bit of natter into a mic? We could probably sort you out with that!

GU2 is the student radio station of the University of Surrey. We broadcast online and on-air 24/7 throughout term. We have space for people who would rather have a Chris Moyles/Vernon Kay type show with fun banter and playlisted music or if you would rather be the next John Peel/Zane Lowe/Westwood with your own specialist show then we'd be happy to have you on board as well.

Just as important is the off-air side of things. We need people for help with the advertising, marketing, technical and production side of things as well as people to join our music team which helps decide our daytime and auto-pilot playlists.

But the best bit is - NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY!!! We provide all the training you need to produce entertaining radio for the whole campus. Its not just students that can get involved. Anyone is welcome to join and contribute to one of the University of Surrey's most active societies.

Then there's the social aspect of GU2 to consider: it's is an awesome place to meet new people and make friendships that will outlast university. You will also get to hear brand new music first, go to gigs for free and interview famous artists.

So, to get involved come along to the General Meetings on Thursdays up in Wates House (Firs Room) at 6:15pm or email training@gu2.co.uk This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Or alternatively click here to go to details about how to sign up for presenter training.

We look forward to seeing you!

1350AM GU2 Radio - History

Station Founded 1972

University Radio Surrey (1972-1989)

The station began life in 1972 as imaginatively titled University Radio Surrey or URS for short. Originally on 962 kHz, the transmission system used a series of inductive loops under each of the halls of residence, which are still there!. It changed frequency to 1602 kHz (or 187 metres) following the re-organisation of medium wave channels that took place in 1978.

Guildford Campus Radio (1989-1999)

Over the summer holidays of 1989 it was decided that the station needed a face-lift. Over a few pints in the union the name Guildford Campus Radio, often shortened to GCR was born. During the 1990s the station ventured on to FM for the first time with FMRSLs (Restricted Service Licences) during Fresher's weeks.

GCR continued until 1999 when the transmission system and studio became so decrepid that there was no life left and it was finally laid to rest (The 1602 kHz frequency was eventually re-assigned to Desi Radio in nearby West London.)

GU2 Radio (2000 Onwards)

The university, and in particular the students' union, decided that having a campus radio station was a good idea and that funding should be found for a new, re-vitalised station. The station applied for, and was awarded, a long-term RSL licence allowing us radiate freely with a power of 1 Watt on 1350 kHz. The station was once again re-branded and took the name GU2 which, for the unaware, is the first half of the postcode for the campus (full postcode GU2 7XH). The Station was awarded UK Student Radio Station of the Year in 2002 after it's first year of full-time broadcasting as GU2.

In 2008 after a lull in it's fortunes GU2 was given a make-over again, but this time it was only visual, as there was nothing wrong with the two studios which we continue to broadcast from. The make-over included the new logo and website revamp, which has acted as a spring-board for the station to continue sucessfully for many years to come.
